I believe it will be going down to 0.3ppm in July this year. My understanding is that we have had two years to get things sorted. I suggest you check your levels using formaldehyde specific Drager tubes. ‘Formaldemeters’ tend to detect all volatile organics fairly indiscriminately. In our main DR at Leicester we thought levels were high (approaching 2ppm) until we properly measured them using this method. I agree that this is poorly documented by HSE etc. Recommend speaking to your chemical safety officer.

It is a good idea to spray the specimens with a wetting solution (we use a mixture of glycerol and IMS). A spray bottle on each table can be used by students or staff to refresh specimens.
Our soaking solution is phenoxyethanol. It is important to ensure that specimens keep getting topped up with alcohol, otherwise mould will definitely set in. It can be deceptive if you have greasy specimens – they look moist, but are in fact quite dry and susceptible to degradation.
