Thanks JohnB and CeriD for your responses. I may have heard incorrectly last year when I visited (I was frantically writing notes down as I went from institution to institution). It may have been an institution specific restriction. This certainly provides enough information to give to the senior academic here (who was a little nervous about using phenol after I said it was not used in the UK).
