Competitions
History of IAS Competitions and Prizewinners
1991:The IAS initiated a competition for members to compete for a Dissection Prize, commencing with the Spring Scientific Meeting.
1992: The Museum Prize was introduced.
1998: The Open Prize was introduced.
2000: Marjorie England, who was the IAS President during this time, generously endowed the Dissection Prize with her name and a beautiful glass trophy in perpetuity. The prize was henceforth known as the Marjorie England Dissection Prize.
2001: The Fellows of the IAS sponsored the Museum Prize, which then became known as the Fellows Museum Prize.
2002: Competitions were moved from the Spring Meeting to the Autumn Meeting. Spring Meetings were traditionally one day events, whereas the Autumn Meetings were run across two days. This extra time provided more time for entries to be judged and viewed by the audience.
2002-2009: During this time, the Open Category was sponsored by Ashton’s Funeral Services.
2010: The IAS Student Dissection category was added to the list of prizes. A great opportunity for the budding Anatomist to shine and add to their learning portfolios.
2014: The IAS Student Dissection Prize was introduced with a “Best Human or Animal Dissection”. There is an overall category winner to acknowledge the wide variety of entries the category traditionally receives.
2015: The Fellows Museums Prize was renamed in memory of Terrence Williamson, whose passing was a great loss. He was a long time fellow of the Institute and his knowledge of potting techniques was irreplaceable. The prize to be henceforth known as the Terrence Williamson Museum Prize.
2016: For the first time, competitions were judged in advance of the Autumn Meeting. Competition posters are displayed at the meeting with the announcements and presentations made at the conference evening.
