Thanks Georgina, that’s great. I visited Sheffield before we set up our lab here. They’re very useful aren’t they? Very care free.

In addition to PPE, our embalmer sprays down with anti-viral disinfectant and secures a bag around the head.

    Thanks Fraser,

I’ve ordered some polyurethane resin but I’ll look into methyl methacrylate. Thanks for the tip with Pottasium hydroxide.

I believe that it’s important to drain blood prior to starting with a saline soloution, to flush any coagulation that may prevent a complete cast. I’ve got some limited experience using silicone to define to blood vessels. I found if the tissue was previously dissected, leaks would develop from any tiny nicks in the vasculature so it was important to do the injection first.

    in reply to: Ventilation #1451

    Dear Sarah,
At Hull York Medical School we use both. We use room ventilation throughout the facility and a downdraft embalming table. Monitoring results from an external contractor suggested it worked well. We’ve had a major refurbishment since then which included a change to the ventilation system and we’re having further monitoring soon to confirm it’s working.
Our embalmers have specific PPE, including a full face shield and plastic aprons. We have powered respirators for use as a back up in case of failure.
