in reply to: Blade Disposal. Please Help. #1202
We now use the Qlicksmart BladeFlask (http://qlicksmart.com/English/prd_bladeflask.htm) and we are very happy with them. We have several dotted around the DR in holders attached to the wall. I have also seen similar ones sat loose on individual dissection tables at other universities however the ones we have state they should only be used in their holders and not loose so there may be different models available.
Our H&S people are very pleased with them.

in reply to: Large Animal Embalming #1106Hi,
We generally don’t embalm anything that has been dead for more than a few hours because we can’t get any blood out of them meaning we dont get a good fixation.
Carys – I would be interested to know if you flush out any of the blood from the frozen cadavers once thawed and if so how do you go about this?
Thanks
Sarah
in reply to: Large Animal Embalming #980Hi Alastair,
Regarding embalming large animals we use the same embalming solution as we do on our smaller specimens. The animal is catheterised at the carotid artery with two tubes, one cranially and one caudally. The animal is hung up for approx 20 mins to attempt to drain out as much blood as possible (heparin is used during euthanasia) and then lain on a long trolley. In ruminants we insert a long needle through the skin into the rumen to release gases. Then perfused (we use a motor pump at 4psi to perfuse most of our specimens) with the embalming solution for up to 30/45 mins in first instance. The animal is then left for 24 hours and then another 20/30 mins perfusion. This is repeated at 24hour intervals for approx 14days excluding weekends. We continue ‘topping up’ the animal with embalming fluid from this point once every 2/3 days until it is required for dissection. The animal is stored in our cold room whilst not embalming.
We do have a problem with mould once the animal is opened up, but this is kept at bay for as long as possible by giving it the occasional good old fashioned wash down followed by spraying down with disinfectant and formaldehyde before being returned to storage in the cold room. Although this does not work indefinately.
Hope this helps! What is your current procedure, if you don’t mind my asking?
Best Wishes

in reply to: Plastination #979Hello again everyone,
Thank you to those who have responded so far to my plastination query. If there is anyone else out there with even the slightest interest please could you let us know.
I was also wondering if it was possible to get some feedback from those of you who are not really interested and the reasons why. Is it price (please bear in mind the price I quoted is just an estimate, and we have tried to overestimate somewhat to avoid future dissapointments), or is it just that you don’t think plastinated specimens are suitable for your courses, or any other reason?
This information would be of a real help to us in order to gauge the potential market.
Thank you very much.

in reply to: Museum pots #971If any of the pots are of non-human origin we would be interested in rehoming some at the RVC. It would be good to know some numbers, types of specimen and condition of the pots (ie. do they need repairing) if possible.
Thanks

in reply to: Museum pots #966Hi there,
Are any of the museum pots looking for homes from species other than human?
Thanks

in reply to: Embalming Fluid #894Hi,
Does anybody use or know anything about the fixative called Cambridge Solution? We have had it recommended to us to use as a fixative for plastination, but we dont have a complete “recipe” for it, and I can’t find any helpful references to it on the internet.
Thanks

in reply to: Formaldehyde #888Hi,
I was wondering if there has been any further news on the formaldehyde level reduction. There was information in the IAS newsletter (122) which suggested there would be a European meeting on the subject in march this year!
Thank you.
