in reply to: Potting workshop?? #1282
Thanks Carys,
Is there any costs for this as of yet? I need to put in the request now if I want to get any money to go.
Cin reply to: Embalming pretreatments #1150Hi Ryan,
We are working with animals so its much different but I am also interested in this topic. When we can get it, we include Heparin in the barbituate injection. Then we catheterise the carotid and hang the cadaver until blood has ceased to flow from the catheter. We still get clotting and incomplete perfusion in some areas. I was wondering if saline flushing would help. However, Im interested to try embalming on animals that are not freshly dead as many veterinary facilities do this, and also the medical schools are getting bodies many hours after death and seem to get adequate and often excellent perfusion and fixation. Very interesting topic!!!in reply to: Any technical skills workshops?? #1136thanks a million. I will contact Steve. C
in reply to: Large Animal Embalming #1108Hi Carys,
So, you dont extract/allow any blood letting at all? The blood just gets pushed into the venous system then?Do you have any problems with incomplete perfusion or ever have any animals that the fluid just doesnt go into?
Also, do you get leakage from the mouth and nose?
Also one more question, do you use a pump and if so, at what psi?

Catherinein reply to: Large Animal Embalming #1103Hi Guys,
Im just wondering if you all embalm your animals just post euthanasia. Im thinking if there is a reason why we dont embalm animals a day after euthanasia. Is it something to do with the coagulation of blood and the consequent difficulties perfusing the fluids throughout the body satisfactorily. If this is the case, why do the human anatomy departments not have the same problem?Have any of you embalmed frozen animals you have defrosted?
Catherinein reply to: Cleaning Old Bone Displays – Advice Please #1098HIya Dave, you mentioned at the meeting in St. Andrews about further de-greasing these greasy bones. What protocol would you use for this? We have quite a few that are seeping grease over the years. Is this due to incomplete preparation or is this inevitable with some species? I will be preparing more skeletal material over the coming months so if this is avoiadable in the first instance, all advice welcomed. :D
in reply to: St Andrews Meeting #1097Hi,
St Andrews meeting was amazing. And of course being my first IAS meeting I got to meet all of you too…which was also pretty good! ;)Thanks to everyone involved in the meeting and everyone at the meeting who made me feel welcome.
Dave, potting is something Id love to hear more about both in terms of maintaining older pots and also creating newer pots for specimen display. Wendy, you will have a great meeting, just a different one! Unfortunately though I more than likely wont be at the spring meeting. See you all in Trinity though in the Autumn. I’ll definately be at that one.
Catherinein reply to: Cleaning Old Bone Displays – Advice Please #1087Thanks for that Dave. I erred on the side of caution and washed them gently in mild detergent. They didnt come up exactly clean but at least they have not got the same level of dust etc on them. I spruced up the backboards and interpretation so overall they look a bit better. Thanks
