History of the IAS Competitions

1991 – Commencing with the Spring Scientific Meeting, the Institute
initiated a competition for members to compete for the Dissection Prize.
1992 – The Museum Prize was introduced.
1998 – The Open Prize was introduced.
2000 – The IAS President generously endowed the Dissection Prize with
her name and a beautiful glass trophy in perpetuity. The prize to be
henceforth known as the Marjorie England Dissection Prize.
2001 – The Fellows of the IAS sponsored the Museum Prize, which then
became known as the Fellows Museum Prize.
2002 – The competitions were moved from the Spring Meeting to the
Autumn meeting. At the time the Spring meetings were traditionally one
day events whereas the Autumn Meetings were run across two days. This
provided more time for the entries to be judged and viewed by the
audience at the meeting.
2002-2009 – The Open Category is sponsored by Ashtons Funeral
Services.
2010 – The IAS Student Dissection category was added to the list of
prizes. A great opportunity for the budding Anatomist to shine and add to
their learning portfolios.
2014 – The IAS Student Dissection Prize introduced naming a “Best
Human or Animal Dissection” in addition to awarding an overall category
winner to acknowledge the wide variety of entries the category
traditionally receives.
2015 – The Fellows Museums Prize was renamed in memory of Terrence
Williamson, who's passing was a great loss. He was a long time fellow of
the institute and his knowledge of potting techniques was irreplaceable.
The prize to be henceforth known as the Terrence Williamson Dissection
Prize.
2016 – The competitions were judged in advance of the Autumn Meeting
for the first time. Competition posters are displayed at the meeting with
the announcements and presentations made at the conference evening.
